Precautions for using seepage-proof breathable bricks

Ladle refining has become an important part of modern steelmaking processes. Argon bottom blowing in the ladle is another crucial step in ladle refining, and the ladle permeable brick is the key component for this process, which is of particular concern to steelmakers. A good permeable brick should have a long service life, good bottom blowing effect, require little or no purging, and be safe and reliable. Currently, permeable bricks are mainly of the slit type and the anti-seepage type. The width and distribution of the slits in the slit-type permeable brick must be reasonably designed according to the ladle capacity, the steel grade being smelted, and the required permeability, so its production process is relatively complex; the anti-seepage type permeable brick produces a large number of irregularly distributed interconnected pores by controlling the particle size ratio of the materials, and its production process is relatively simple.
Secondary refining has become an important part of modern steelmaking. Argon bottom blowing in a ladle is also an important part of secondary refining. The ladle breathable brick is the key component of this process, and steel plant manufacturers pay particular attention to it. A good breathable brick should have a long service life, good bottom-blowing effect, no (or little) purging, and be safe and reliable. Current breathable bricks are mainly of the slit type and the seepage-proof type. The width and distribution of the slits in the slit type breathable bricks must be reasonably designed according to the ladle capacity, steel grade and required permeability, therefore its production process is relatively complex; the seepage-proof type breathable bricks generate a large number of irregularly distributed interconnected pores by controlling the particle size ratio of the materials, and its production process is relatively simple.
Seepage-proof breathable bricks adopt a structure combining a breathable core with a dense, high-strength material: the working area of the brick core is seepage-proof, and the safety device uses a slit-type design. When a slit-type gas channel is observed, it indicates that the residual height of the breathable brick is insufficient and the breathable brick needs to be replaced.

During transportation and installation of the breathable brick, ensure that the threads of the tail pipe are not damaged to prevent loose pipe connections, leaks, and effects on the argon blowing flow and blowing efficiency; ensure that dust and debris do not enter the tail pipe, etc.; ensure that the working surface of the breathable brick is not covered by fireclay or other materials to prevent unsuccessful bottom blowing. During installation or use, ensure that the pipe connections are tight and leak-proof, otherwise the argon pressure will be insufficient, affecting the stirring effect, and leading to a decrease in the blowing through rate.
When adding alloy too early during the converter steel tapping, if the steel level in the ladle is too low, the low melting point and high permeability of the alloy can easily lead to poor breathability of the brick core. In addition, adding the alloy too early leads to a lower temperature at the bottom of the ladle; if the argon blowing operation is not standardized, and argon stirring is not started promptly after steel tapping, it is easy to make it difficult to blow open in the early stage of refining.
Severe bottom shell formation, a large number of online circulating ladles, timely slag removal after steel casting, hot repair without purging the breathable brick, long ladle hot shutdown time, and low steel tapping temperature can all easily lead to residual molten steel and steel slag on the surface of the brick core, easy surface shell formation, and affect the breathability.
