During the use of porous bricks in steel plants, the main reasons for damage to the porous bricks are thermal stress, mechanical stress, mechanical wear, and chemical corrosion. Porous bricks consist of two parts: a porous core and a porous seat brick. When bottom blowing gas is used, the working surface of the porous core will directly contact the high-temperature molten steel. The bottom blowing gas is a cold air stream, forming a large temperature difference with the high-temperature molten steel. As the number of uses increases, due to the rapid cooling and heating, the erosion of the porous brick core becomes deeper, and cracks are easily produced. The working surface of the bottom porous brick is in direct contact with the high-temperature molten steel, while the temperature of the non-working surface is relatively low.
During the use of converter breathable bricks in steel mills, the main reasons for damage to the breathable bricks are thermal stress, mechanical stress, mechanical wear, and chemical corrosion.
Breathable bricks consist of two parts: a breathable core and a breathable seat brick. When bottom-blowing gas is turned on, the working surface of the breathable core will come into direct contact with high-temperature molten steel. The bottom-blowing gas is a cold air stream, forming a large temperature difference between it and the high-temperature molten steel. As the number of uses increases, due to the repeated rapid cooling and heating, the erosion of the breathable brick core deepens, easily causing cracks.
The working surface of the bottom breathable brick is in direct contact with high-temperature molten steel, while the non-working surface temperature is relatively low. During the cyclical use of the converter in steel receiving, steel pouring, and hot repair, the volume of the breathable brick and nearby refractory materials changes due to temperature changes. Due to the temperature gradient and the different thermal expansion coefficients of its altered layer and original layer, the degree of volume change gradually changes from the working surface to the non-working surface of the breathable brick, resulting in shear force on the breathable brick, causing transverse cracks in the breathable brick, and in severe cases, causing transverse fracture of the breathable brick.

During steelmaking, the molten steel will strongly scour the bottom of the converter, accelerating the erosion of the breathable bricks. When the upper surface of the breathable brick is higher than the converter bottom, it will be subjected to shear and scouring caused by the molten steel flow. The part above the converter bottom is usually scoured away after one use. In addition, if the valve is quickly closed after refining, the reverse impact of the molten steel will also accelerate the erosion of the breathable bricks.
The working surface of the breathable brick core is in contact with steel slag and molten steel for a long time. The steel slag and molten steel contain iron oxide, ferrous oxide, manganese oxide, magnesium oxide, silicon oxide, etc., while the breathable brick contains aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, etc., which will react to form low-melting substances (such as FeO·Al2O3, 2(MnO)·SiO2·Al2O3, etc.) and be scoured away.
