Methods to improve the lifespan of permeable bricks

As a refractory material, permeable bricks play a vital role in the steelmaking process. With increased use, the wear and tear on permeable bricks becomes increasingly severe. Therefore, extending the service life of permeable bricks can, to a certain extent, increase steel production. The main methods include asymmetric bottom blowing, replacing the permeable core, controlling reasonable bottom blowing parameters, and maintenance. (Figure) In the asymmetric bottom blowing method using split permeable bricks, two sets of permeable bricks work alternately during production. Generally speaking, when both sets of permeable bricks are fully utilized, the ladle life can be significantly extended. Moreover, the permeable brick's high flow rate is not a problem unless the ladle is exceptionally large.
Breathable bricks, as refractory materials, play a crucial role in the steelmaking process for steel mills. As the number of uses increases, the wear and tear on the breathable bricks becomes increasingly severe. Therefore, improving the service life of breathable bricks can relatively increase steel production. Main methods include asymmetric bottom blowing, replacing the breathable core, controlling reasonable bottom blowing parameters, and maintenance.

In the asymmetric bottom blowing method, two sets of breathable bricks work alternately during production. Generally speaking, when the two sets of breathable bricks are fully utilized, the campaign life can be significantly increased. Even when the converter is not very large, high-flow gas supply to the breathable bricks is not a major problem. Comparatively speaking, this method increases costs, but this is insignificant compared to the improved effects and economic benefits from increased campaign life.
Using the method of replacing the breathable core with a split-type breathable brick, after the breathable core alarm is triggered, the underlying bricks are broken, and a new breathable core is replaced. This method achieves full utilization of other refractory materials in the converter and extends its campaign life.
Controlling reasonable bottom blowing parameters and regular maintenance are not only beneficial for increasing campaign life but also for maintaining good metallurgical effects. During the use of breathable bricks, if the bottom blowing pressure is too high, the steel will roll violently, and after contacting the air, it will cause secondary oxidation of the steel; if the pressure is too low, the steel will not be blown, leading to bottom blowing failure and affecting the metallurgical effect. In addition, long-term neglect of maintenance of the bottom blowing device may lead to leaks, not only resulting in the loss of bottom blowing gas and increased production costs, but also potentially causing low bottom blowing pressure and affecting the production process.
