In addition to permeable bricks and water-mouth bricks, magnesia-carbon bricks are essential refractory materials used in steel ladles. Magnesia-carbon bricks are composite refractory materials made from high-melting-point magnesia and high-melting-point carbon materials that are difficult to be infiltrated by slag, with various non-oxide additives added as binders. They are mainly used in steel ladle slag lines, converters, and electric arc furnaces.

Several methods to reduce the erosion of magnesia-carbon bricks: Select high-quality materials with stable composition, increase the content of magnesium oxide in the slag, and add a protective layer to the surface of the magnesia-carbon brick.
Selecting high-quality materials with stable composition can improve the material's erosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, etc. Among them, electrically fused magnesia has advantages such as high purity, large crystal grains, dense structure, strong slag resistance, and good thermal shock stability, and is an excellent high-temperature electrical insulating material.
The content of magnesium oxide in the slag should be increased as much as possible, and the silicate phase in the magnesia-carbon brick structure should be reduced, which can avoid carbon oxidation, make the magnesium oxide in the slag reach saturation, and reduce the dissolution of magnesium oxide. Since magnesium oxide is a basic oxide, increasing the basicity of the slag can reduce the chemical reaction between the slag and magnesium oxide, thereby reducing the chemical erosion of the magnesia-carbon brick.
Adding a protective layer to the surface of the magnesia-carbon brick can prevent contact between the magnesia-carbon brick and the slag, preventing physical penetration and chemical erosion by high-temperature molten steel and slag.
