The ladle lining can be divided into a working layer, a permanent layer, a slag line layer, and a heat insulation layer. Considering both heat preservation and steel penetration, high-alumina castables are used for the permanent layer material. To enhance its heat preservation performance, a layer of mullite lightweight bricks is built between the high-alumina castable and the steel shell.
The working layer at the bottom of the ladle bears the impact of molten steel and considerable hydrostatic pressure, and corundum castables are used. Magnesia-carbon bricks are built around the permeable bricks and nozzle bricks for easy disassembly and repair and to prevent excessive expansion. During refining, the working layer of the ladle wall is subjected to carbon absorption, rolling and scouring by the molten steel, and erosion by the slag. This part should have good erosion resistance, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance, and corundum castables are selected.
