The electric furnace cover (also known as the triangular area of the electric furnace roof) is subjected to high temperatures and frequent rapid cooling and heating, so it not only needs to be high-temperature resistant but also needs to have a certain degree of thermal shock resistance. Generally speaking, the degree of volume change caused by temperature changes in a substance is closely related to the substance's thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, elastic modulus, and inherent strength.
The electric furnace cover (also known as the electric furnace roof triangle area) is subjected to high temperatures and frequent rapid heating and cooling cycles. Therefore, it needs not only high temperature resistance but also a certain degree of thermal shock resistance. Generally speaking, the degree of volume change caused by temperature changes in a substance is closely related to the substance's thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, elastic modulus, and inherent strength. Substances with lower thermal expansion coefficients, higher thermal conductivity, higher elastic moduli, and higher inherent strength have better thermal shock resistance. Selecting the right material for producing the electric furnace cover is crucial not only for the service life of the cover but also for the production output of the electric furnace.

Refractory materials used for electric furnace covers in China include introducing spinel with a low expansion coefficient into the material, adding zirconia to mullite and other materials to utilize its phase transformation toughening, and adding steel fibers, etc. In recent years, China has developed various refractory castables to meet the needs of ultra-high-power electric furnaces, such as corundum spinel castables and corundum mullite castables. In the electric furnace cover triangular area, the integral cast cover uses refractory prefabricated blocks, with main materials including corundum, chromic corundum, high alumina, and mullite.
