The porous core is an important component of refined refractory materials. In most out-of-furnace refining equipment, porous bricks are used to blow in inert gases (such as argon) to enhance the stirring of the molten pool and ensure uniform temperature and composition. The porous core plays a very important role in out-of-furnace refining.
Permeable bricks are an important component of refined refractory materials. In most out-of-furnace refining equipment, inert gases (such as argon) are blown into the permeable bricks to enhance molten pool stirring and ensure uniform temperature and composition. In LF, VD, and CAS-OB processes, the above processes cannot be carried out without the normal operation of the bottom-blown permeable brick core; therefore, the role of the permeable brick core in out-of-furnace refining is very important.

Strictly speaking, a permeable brick consists of two parts: a permeable brick core and a seat brick for installing the permeable brick core. The permeable brick core is conical, and the seat brick is a rectangular brick with holes, with the permeable brick core installed inside the permeable seat brick.
After years of development, there are currently three common types of permeable brick cores used in out-of-furnace refining: dispersed type, straight-through directional type, and slit type permeable bricks.
1. Dispersed type. In actual production, by adding carbon-containing compounds to the mixture, the advantage is that it burns without residue at low temperatures, so this advantage can be used to obtain a suitable porosity. Dispersed permeable brick cores are only used in refining ladles. Conical dispersed permeable brick cores are more commonly used. The disadvantage is that they have low strength and short service life, requiring replacement several times during a campaign. Therefore, a sleeve brick should be added between the permeable brick core and the seat brick.
2. Straight-through directional type. The gas path design of the straight-through directional permeable brick is a straight-through hole or a straight-through slit type, and its shape is generally conical or rectangular. Because the straight-through hole type permeable brick used in ladles is more complex to manufacture and has a small gas permeability, the straight-through slit type permeable brick has replaced the straight-through hole type permeable brick.
3. Slit type. This permeable brick core is the most commonly used structural form of permeable bricks. Reasonable slits can be designed according to the on-site usage conditions, including steel grade, process, ladle capacity, temperature, etc., to achieve the best blowing effect, longer service life, and stable safety performance of the permeable brick. The gas channel of the slit type permeable brick core is a strip-shaped slit, and the number and length of the slits have a large adjustment range, so the permeability is relatively reliable. However, due to the large number of slits, the core strength is low, and it is easy to break and erode, resulting in a short service life.
