With the continuous development of steelmaking technology, the application range of breathable bricks is becoming wider and wider, from traditional argon bottom-blowing breathable bricks for steel ladles to medium-frequency furnace breathable bricks and molten iron ladle breathable bricks. Three points depend on the product, and seven points on usage. To effectively use breathable bricks, it becomes necessary to discuss the argon bottom-blowing process for breathable bricks. Let's start with the argon blowing process requirements for breathable bricks:
1. Bubbles must have sufficient residence time
To fully adsorb the impurities along their path, the argon bubbles must have sufficient residence and reaction time in the molten steel. The residence time depends on the speed at which the bubbles detach from the working surface of the breathable brick, the depth of the molten steel, the size of the bubbles, and the length of the path of the bubbles in the molten steel.
2. Sufficient number of bubbles is required
To fully remove impurities from the molten steel, there must be enough bubbles. This depends on the permeability and the number of molten steel circulation times during the argon blowing time. Therefore, to ensure enough bubbles, we need sufficient argon blowing intensity to ensure the escape velocity of the bubbles. Although increasing the argon blowing time can also increase the number of molten steel circulations, as is well known, the bottom-blown gas is generally at room temperature, so excessive argon blowing time will cause excessive cooling of the molten steel.
3. Optimal gas supply pressure is needed
Whether the molten steel is stirred evenly and whether there are any dead corners in the circulation all depend on the stirring method and argon blowing intensity. Excessive gas pressure will reduce the dispersibility of the bubbles and may even cause gas columns, resulting in reduced gas utilization, increased costs, and violent churning of the molten steel without forming an effective inert gas protective atmosphere, causing serious secondary oxidation of the molten steel. Therefore, the optimal gas supply pressure is a very important parameter. The optimal pressure is to ensure that the expelled gas does not break through the slag layer, and the molten steel driven by it spreads evenly along the interface between the molten steel and the slag, which is conducive to the adsorption of slag by the slag layer.
4 Reasonably adjust the residence time and number of bubbles and the evenness of molten steel stirring
In ladle refining, to achieve alloy fine-tuning, desulfurization, deoxidation, and degassing processes, multi-step mass transfer and interfacial reactions are required. This will have different requirements for the residence time and number of bubbles and the evenness of molten steel stirring. Generally, while adopting other refining methods, the argon blowing process will be adjusted synchronously.
Conclusion
As a functional refractory material, the importance of breathable bricks is self-evident. To make good use of each breathable brick while saving costs, we need to continuously improve our understanding of the use of breathable bricks.
